Wow, that’s pretty bad. I had to pay out the ass for my dorming and food, but there were 3 meal times a day. American universities are awful. And student riots wouldn’t work considering how dangerous the police are here.

Police in general tend to be dangerous. The nature of the job simply attracts people with high power motivation, often unsocialized. It’s unfortunate. If I recall correctly, Montreal too had some problems with police during the student protests.

Honestly, I think more to the point as to why student protests wouldn’t work is that school has power over the kids. You go on strike and refuse to go to class? Great, they’ll kick your ass out and accept new students, and you’ll be 60K poorer and without a degree. Not to mention pretty much no one would risk it when you’re paying that much a year.

yeah no imo the protest here were ridiculously slef-righteous when you look at how impossibly high tuition is nearly everywhere else >:|

whatever you do don’t follow the tuition everywhere else xD

personally i just tried not to have an opinion either way, which I did as long as the protestors didn’t try to stop me getting to my classes.

Yo I live right outside of DC. American universities typically charge ridiculous fees but at least the one I went to had all-you-can-eat dining halls…

Believe me, I know about ridiculous American university rates - I’m an American myself, and that’s like one of the main reasons I’m studying in Canada right now. ‘Cause, like, even with the international student fees, it’s 60% cheaper. :P

Gosh an all-you-can-eat dining all, that would be wonderful.

Montreal peeps - remember the student protests from a few years back and remember your reasons for it (perfectly valid reasons, I’m not arguing)

But now -

Try this on for size:

My little sister just started university and we are required to pay 1.7K per semester in FOOD ALONE for her. And here’s the kicker:

That gets her one meal a day

My sister gets $15 to spend a day, which she can only spend at expensive Washington DC restaurants (there is no cafeteria), and these restaurants inflate their prices to deal with the commission her university takes for each purchase.

From this meal plan, the university will earn 122 MILLION in profits over 10 years and they don’t use that fucking feed their students

….Anybody want to roadtrip to DC with me and start a riot there?

This is Chester. When I was in Afghanistan I got a care package from one of those “Adopt a Soldier” programs that lets families send care packages to service men and women who are deployed overseas. Anyway, I got this care package, and it came with the usual stuff: Baby wipes, crackers, peanut butter, the Dad threw in a pack of cigarettes, and there was some jerky. But there was also a little beanie baby gold fish and a hand written note from a 7 year old girl that said
“Dear Soldier, (I wasn’t even mad)
I hope you are doing well. I’m sorry you have to miss thanksgiving with your family. This is my friend Chester. He keeps me safe from monsters, but I think you need him more than I do. I hope he keeps you safe from the monsters you’re fighting. Take good care of him for me”.

You bet your ass that little fish was in my pocket every time I went on patrol.
